Here are a few facts that may answer your questions:
1. Research Costs Money!!!
There are currently 2 projects being funded by the Parent
Club, the Siberian Husky Club of America for juvenile cataract
research through the CHF. Together these projects cost $3000.00
per year. Although this sounds like a lot of money, in reality
this money is funding one part-time graduate student. There
is no large research projected dedicated to this problem.
Imagine a cheek swab DNA test on 2 week old puppies to determine
if they are clear, affected, or a carrier for cataracts.
Today's dream is tomorrow's reality. All it takes is money.
2. Breed Club Affiliation
This Foundation is not affiliated with any local or national
Siberian Husky club, but we encourage and welcome support
from any club that wishes to help further the important
work of research into hereditary disease. We are a separate
entity so that all monies donated to SHHF can be tax-deductible
to you and go directly to researching answers to the genetic
and non-genetic problems that appear in our breed. Whether
or not you are a member of any club, SHHF welcomes your
input, expertise and donations. You can become a valuable
asset to our organization.
3. One Purpose, and Only One
Purpose
The Founders and Trustees of SHHF will focus entirely on
the specific purpose of the SHHF, to ensure the continuity
of needed funding for research into eye, hip, testicle,
thyroid, epilepsy and any other problem that turns up as
a result of the health surveys. The make-up of a Parent
Club Board changes on a regular basis, and each Board has
a wide variety of issues to deal with. Those issues include
the health and welfare of the breed, but with so many issues
to deal with, research into genetic and health problems
can sometimes take a back seat to other important matters.
SHHF has only one purpose - to improve the lot of the Siberian
Husky through research into health issues of the breed.
4. Health Foundations are Efficient
and Consistent
The health and welfare of the breed is the only concern
of this foundation. Decisions concerning research grants
and donations are made in an educated, informed, and timely
manner. Health concerns of the breed are posted and available
to any concerned individual. Breed information is currently
being collected through surveys, journal listings, and correspondence
with veterinary professionals.
