LINKS LAWN CHEMICALS TO CANINE BLADDER CANCER
Perdue College of Veterinary Medicine has completed studies
that suggest a link between lawn chemicals and urinary bladder
cancer in Scottish Terriers. The controlled research showed
that dogs exposed to lawns treated with insecticides and
herbicides were at a significant higher risk for transistional
cell carcinoma of the bladder wall. The study showed that
Scotties are much more suspectible to bladder cancer and
recommends that this breed and other high risk breeds stay
away from treated lawns. Continued studies are now being
done to determine the type of chemical responsible and to
survey children living in the same households as the affected
dogs. This study is sponsered by the Canine Health Foundation
and the Scottish Terrier Club of America.
NEW TICKALERT.COM
WEB SITE
There is a new web site TickAlert.com
that will inform pet owners and veterinarians about the
population of ticks in their area. This web site gives tick
forecasts for the emergence of tick adults, nymphs, and
eggs for the American Dog Tick, the deer tick, and the Lone
Star Tick.
The graph covers the entire year and is quite informative.
Information is gathered by zip codes. The sponsor of the
web site is the Virbac corporation from Fort Worth, Texas.
